Born in Brooklyn, NY, she moved to San Diego at the tender age of 7. She diligently pursued her education at San Diego State University, where she not only earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees but also met her future husband, Jeff Stone. Their shared academic interests blossomed into a beautiful marriage in September 1969.
Ilene dedicated nearly three decades to teaching American History at San Diego Community College’s evening program, captivating students with her engaging storytelling and profound knowledge. After retiring, her passion for history took a new direction when she became fascinated with the life of singer Jane Froman. Ilene traveled to Columbia, Missouri, to research and ultimately authored two significant books about Jane, one being published by the University’s Press.
An avid traveler and lifelong Padres fan, Ilene cherished attending games and watching her beloved team on television. She is survived by her husband Jeff, children Rob and Hallie, daughter-in-law Lisa, grandsons Alden and Hudson, and brother Jay. Graveside services will occur at Greenwood Memorial Park. In her memory, contributions can be made to the Jane Froman Smith Memorial Scholarship.
